Earn your national certification

This intensive one-day course covers both Level 1 and Level 2 of the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) curriculum, taking you from fundamental theory to advanced technical maneuvers. Set in the calm, scenic waters of the Waterford Conservation Area, you will build the confidence and skill set required to handle a canoe in various conditions.
The Professional Path
Morning: Foundations and Theory The day begins with a deep dive into the heritage of Canadian canoeing. You will learn the essential theory behind hull design and paddle dynamics before moving to the water to master the basics. We cover essential safety protocols, including lifts and carries, ensuring you can manage your gear on land as comfortably as you do on the water.
Afternoon: Technical Mastery As the day progresses, we transition into high-level technical skills. You will practice precision strokes, dock landings, and sophisticated maneuvers that allow for total boat control. A critical component of the afternoon is dedicated to safety and rescue, where you will learn and execute capsized canoe rescues in a controlled, supportive environment.
Why This Certification Matters
ORCKA is the gold standard for paddling instruction in Ontario. By combining Levels 1 and 2 into a single 9-hour session, you bypass the learning curve and gain a comprehensive understanding of solo and tandem paddling. You won’t just learn how to move the boat; you will understand the mechanics of the water and the vessel, leaving with a certification recognized across the province.
