Riding the Freshet: Spring Whitewater on the Nith
The Nith River is a hidden gem that only reveals its true character during the spring freshet. For a few brief weeks each year, the melting snow and spring rains transform this winding river into a technical whitewater playground.
The window for these runs is notoriously narrow. Because the Nith is a rain-fed system, water levels can rise and fall in a matter of hours. We monitor the gauges daily, waiting for that perfect intersection of high volume and safe paddling conditions.
Safety is our primary focus before we welcome guests onto the river. We recently completed our seasonal scouting trip to inspect the corridor, ensuring the path is clear of any new sweepers or strainers. With the river looking good, we are ready to launch as soon as the hydrograph and the forecast align.
When the water rises and the weather breaks, things move quickly. These runs are often announced with only a few days’ notice to ensure we are hitting the river at peak levels.
If you want to experience the rush of spring whitewater, keep a close watch on our booking page. As the spring rains continue, we will be opening up dates that coincide with optimal water levels and favorable weather.
