Braving the Current: Mastering the River in Early Season

The river has a way of calling to people at the exact moment they need a challenge, and yesterday’s crew was ready to answer.

We recently hosted a diverse group of adventurers for our Learning to Paddle: The Full Day Experience. The roster brought together a fantastic mix of perspectives, from those picking up a paddle for the first time to seasoned backcountry explorers looking to fine-tune their craft. I love guests who brave the uncertainty of early season weather to fully embrace the outdoors. Despite the crisp shoulder season chill, the energy remained high as everyone suited up in wetsuits, determined to sharpen their skills and build confidence on moving water.

The day served as a deep dive into the technical and practical essentials of river travel. We started with the foundations: comprehensive safety briefings and a detailed breakdown of canoe anatomy. From there, we moved into the art of the stroke, mastering the precise movements required to navigate currents with total confidence. Because preparation is the key to any successful expedition, we also spent time on hands-on water rescues, ensuring every paddler is equipped to handle the unexpected.

After honing our skills with drills on the shore and flat water, the group shuttled upstream to put everything into practice. Navigating the river together was an inspiring display of grit and growth. It served as a powerful reminder that with the right gear and a healthy dose of determination, the paddling season is already in full swing.
