Keeping it Grand: Stewardship in Action
As the last traces of winter snow finally recede into the banks of the Grand, they leave behind more than just damp earth. Every spring, the “unveiling” happens—a stark reminder of the winter’s runoff and the debris that gathered while the river was quiet.
With Earth Day approaching on April 22nd, the focus at Grand Experiences shifts from navigating the water to protecting it. This is the season of stewardship, where we transition from spectators of nature to its active guardians.

What the Snow Leaves Behind
Winter has a way of hiding our impact. As the drifts melt, they reveal the “pests” of the waterway—plastic, glass, and forgotten debris that don’t belong in our Carolinian forest ecosystem.
For us, the spring clean isn’t just a chore; it’s a necessary ritual. It’s the collective effort required to ensure that when the first canoes hit the water in May, the river is as pristine as it deserves to be. Preparing these waterways is a shared responsibility, ensuring the turtles, eagles, and fish have a healthy home before the busy season begins.
Stewardship in Action: Leave No Trace
Earth Day is the perfect time for a “Leave No Trace” refresher. As you prepare for your own spring outings, keep these core principles in mind to help us keep the Grand clean:
- Pack It In, Pack It Out: If it went down the river with you, it must come back out with you. This includes organic waste like orange peels or apple cores, which can take years to decompose and disrupt local wildlife diets.
- Leave What You Find: Preserve the beauty of the river for the next paddler. Rocks, plants, and historical artifacts should stay exactly where they are.
- Respect the Banks: Spring soil is incredibly fragile and prone to erosion. Always use established launch points and portage trails to protect the river’s edge.
A Community Effort
The Grand River is the lifeblood of our region, but it only stays “Grand” through active stewardship. Whether you are joining a formal community river clean-up or simply picking up a few stray pieces of litter during your next walk along the trail, every action contributes to the “Spring Clean.”
At Grand Experiences, we are spending the weeks leading up to April 22nd scouting the banks and clearing the way. We want the river to be ready for the students, families, and adventurers who will soon call it home for the summer.
